Nitro: Clearing a Flooded Engine

Instructions on how to clear a nitro vehicle's flooded engine.  Download
One common problem faced by many Nitro vehicle owners, is a flooded engine. Although we hate to admit it, there is a good chance that this will happen to you at least once during your RC career.

During a routine startup, it is not uncommon to have the engine "lock up." Although alarming at first, more often than not, the nitro engine may just have become flooded with too much fuel during the startup process. Luckily, this is a relatively simple fix. Clearing the engine can be a painless process if you follow these quick and easy steps.

Typically, when an engine becomes flooded, it will experience difficulty starting.

Symptoms of a flooded engine include:

  • Difficulty starting
  • Muffled sounds coming from the exhaust
  • Pull starter has become hard to pull or won't operate
  •  Excess fuel draining from the exhaust outlet

  • 1. Disconnect the glow plug wire from the glow plug if present. Proceed to remove the glow plug from the engine using a two-way 5/16" nut driver.

  • 2. Turn the nitro vehicle upside down and quickly pull the pull start a few times. This should turn the engine over at a rapid rate, causing any excess fuel from the combustion chamber and crankcase to be drained. If, after several pulls from the starter, there is still fuel coming out of the engine, continue this process until all the fuel has been drained from the crankcase.

  • 3. Be careful to wipe away any raw fuel from the cooling head with a clean rag and reinstall the glow plug. When installing the glow plug, make sure to install the copper glow plug gasket correctly before installing the glow plug.

  • 4. Your engine is now ready to start. It is no longer necessary to prime the engine, as it may already contain some fuel residue.
